Two Decades of Vertical Ambition: KAILAS Marks Mountain Project Milestone

Veteran climbers gathered at Chengdu MixC on August 7 to mark twenty years of the KAILAS Mountain Adventure Project. The session served as both a retrospective on the evolution of Chinese mountaineering and a showcase for the technical breakthroughs achieved on peaks like the challenging Yaomei Feng.

Since its 2006 inception, the project has acted as a catalyst for shifting Chinese climbing from merely repeating established paths to pioneering original lines in previously unclimbed terrain. Figures such as Jon Otto, Li Zongli, and Liu Junfu traced this trajectory, noting how the culture of exploration has matured alongside technical skills. A central focus of the discussion was Yaomei Peak, where diverse generations of athletes have consistently pushed the limits of what is possible on a single massif.

Technical nuance dominated the conversation, particularly regarding the 2024 ascent of the north face of Yaomei Peak and the establishment of the new route dubbed "Wu." Alan Rousseau, a two-time Piolet d’Or winner, provided an international lens, emphasizing that China’s climbing potential remains a vital component of the global mountaineering dialogue. To preserve these hard-won insights, the organizers launched a dedicated digital archive. This platform aggregates two decades of route data, expedition logs, and technical reports, intended to serve as a resource for the next wave of climbers seeking to document their own progress.
