The spray, known as Zyrtec Allergen Shield, operates on a principle similar to sunscreen by creating a lightweight protective gel inside the nasal passage. Formulated with Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC), the mist provides up to six hours of defense against common environmental irritants. It is specifically intended for use before exposure, such as mowing the lawn or visiting spaces with pets, rather than as a reactive treatment for existing congestion.
Jenn Lovell, head of US Allergy at Kenvue, described the release as a shift toward proactive management for the millions of consumers who rely on the brand. The product is currently available at major U.S. retailers for adults and children aged 12 and older. While Zyrtec remains the leading doctor-recommended brand for oral OTC relief, this development marks its first move into drug-free physical barrier technology.
