SK Hynix Initiates Record 40 Trillion Won Share Buyback

South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix has authorized a 40 trillion won share repurchase and cancellation program, the largest of its kind in the country’s corporate history. The move follows a board resolution on August 19 aimed at correcting what leadership views as an undervaluation of the company's current stock price.

The aggressive buyback targets 24.07 million shares, equivalent to roughly 3.3% of the company's total issued stock. Management intends to execute the repurchases over a three-month window beginning August 20, with all acquired shares slated for immediate cancellation. This accelerated timeline shifts the company’s 2025-2027 shareholder return strategy into high gear, surpassing its previous commitment.

Beyond this specific repurchase, SK Hynix is raising its long-term shareholder return target to over 50% of cumulative free cash flow, up from a previous cap of 50%. The strategy relies on a dual-track approach, combining share cancellations with cash dividends. As the company maintains a dominant position in the AI memory market, it reported a net cash position of approximately 69 trillion won at the end of the second quarter. Future payout expansions, including potential special dividends, remain under consideration as the firm monitors market conditions and ongoing cash flow performance.
