Cubic-Metalens Breakthrough Enables Focus-Free Imaging

Engineers at the University of Science and Technology of China have engineered a flat, ultrathin device that merges optical focusing with wavefront coding. By integrating these functions into a single metasurface, the team has created a camera system capable of maintaining sharp focus without the bulk of traditional mechanical components.

Traditional camera systems often struggle with depth of focus, forcing a constant mechanical readjustment to prevent blurring as objects shift. Existing solutions like wavefront coding typically require separate, bulky components, which hinder miniaturization. Professor Yonghua Lu and his team addressed this by developing a cubic-metalens that utilizes nanoscale silicon structures to manipulate light directly on a flat surface.

Published in the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, the study details how the device pairs with a standard CMOS sensor and computational reconstruction. In testing, the system maintained high-fidelity imaging even when objects were displaced by three centimeters from the focal plane—a distance that caused conventional metalenses to fail. The setup proved resilient even when obscured by transparent obstacles like glass plates or water. This integration of optics and computation offers a path toward more stable, compact camera modules for specialized fields such as biomedical imaging and machine vision.
