Consumers Energy Targets Grid Reliability with $90 Million Upgrade Push

With over 1,000 infrastructure projects finalized across Michigan, Consumers Energy is accelerating efforts to fortify its power grid against outages. The utility has funneled $90 million into system repairs this year, targeting substation hardware and distribution lines across 55 counties to stabilize service for millions of residents.

The initiative addresses chronic power interruptions by prioritizing regions where infrastructure degradation most frequently impacts customers. Greg Salisbury, senior vice president of electric distribution, noted that 75 cents of every dollar collected from users is being reinvested directly into these mechanical replacements and high-voltage line maintenance. The company aims to complete an additional 886 projects before the year closes.

Financial commitments are localized to emphasize areas of greatest need. Allegan County led the investment volume with $13 million in completed work through July, followed by Kent County at $12 million and Saginaw County at $7 million. Looking toward the winter months, the firm has earmarked significant capital for Calhoun, Grand Traverse, and Gladwin counties to ensure the Lower Peninsula’s energy network remains resilient against seasonal volatility. As Michigan’s largest energy provider, the utility currently serves 6.8 million people, making the scale of these upgrades a critical factor in the state’s ongoing energy stability.
