Electric Car Rental Market Set to Double by 2031

The global electric car rental market is poised for rapid expansion, with projections indicating a rise from USD 9.71 billion in 2025 to USD 21.37 billion by 2031. Analysts attribute this 14.41% growth rate to aggressive fleet electrification mandates and the strengthening of essential fast-charging infrastructure at major transit hubs.

Major rental operators are recalibrating their business models to accommodate stricter emission regulations. While internal-combustion vehicles face declining appeal, companies that invest early in charging networks are securing a competitive edge in high-traffic airport contracts. Battery electric vehicles currently dominate new fleet orders, bolstered by financial strategies designed to mitigate depreciation risks.

Phani Kumar, a senior research manager at Mordor Intelligence, notes that the shifting landscape is forcing smaller operators to navigate higher initial investment costs. The sector is seeing increased pressure from digital-first platforms and peer-to-peer services, which are challenging traditional incumbents. Regional growth remains uneven; while Asia-Pacific benefits from proactive government initiatives, players in South America and the Middle East continue to grapple with significant infrastructure gaps and environmental hurdles. Despite these challenges, the narrowing total cost gap between electric and conventional vehicles suggests a long-term transition toward electrified rental fleets across global markets.
