Harry Zhu to lead WSECU as long-time CEO Gary Swindler retires

After a nationwide search, the board of WSECU has selected Harry Zhu to succeed retiring CEO Gary Swindler. Zhu, the former head of USAlliance Federal Credit Union, will officially transition into the role on September 21, 2026, inheriting oversight of a $5.1 billion institution nearing its 70th anniversary.

Zhu brings a background in digital-focused banking, having spent 13 years at Alliant Credit Union where he oversaw a period of rapid expansion, growing assets from $7 billion to $18 billion. His appointment marks the end of a 37-year chapter for Swindler, who rose through the ranks from loan officer to the executive office. During his tenure, Swindler navigated significant shifts in the credit union’s digital infrastructure and service network, particularly through the challenges of the pandemic.

Board chair Vikki Smith emphasized that the transition aims to balance institutional growth with the cooperative's long-standing community mission. Zhu, who holds master's degrees from the University of Michigan, will relocate to Olympia to oversee the 315,000-member organization. The pair will work together over the coming weeks to finalize the leadership handover before Swindler’s departure next month.
