Gary White Awarded 2025 Hoover Medal for Global Water Advocacy

Gary White, co-founder of Water.org, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Hoover Medal, one of engineering’s highest humanitarian honors. The award recognizes his three-decade career spent bridging the gap between technical infrastructure and the financial barriers that prevent millions of people from accessing safe water and sanitation.

The Hoover Medal Board selected White for his pioneering approach to the global water crisis, which shifted the focus from traditional aid to sustainable financing. By developing the WaterCredit model, White transformed how households in poverty secure water infrastructure, moving beyond simple construction projects to address the economic realities of those in need. His work has facilitated access to safe water and sanitation for more than 92 million people across 15 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Professor Joel Burken will present the award during the Stockholm International Water Institute’s World Water Week on August 27. White, who holds three degrees in civil and environmental engineering, joins a historic roster of recipients including Herbert Hoover, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Steve Wozniak. The honor highlights a rare recognition for water and sanitation engineering, signaling a pivot in how the industry views humanitarian impact as a core component of professional service.
