Unipol Chief Vows to Keep Monte dei Paschi Base in Siena

The headquarters of Banca Monte dei Paschi will remain in Siena should Intesa Sanpaolo succeed in its takeover bid, according to Unipol Chairman Carlo Cimbri. The assurance follows concerns over the future of the historic Tuscan lender as part of a complex restructuring involving multiple Italian financial institutions.

Under the proposed acquisition, Intesa intends to divest the MPS brand alongside roughly half of the bank's branch network. These assets would move to Unipol, which plans to integrate them into BPER, the medium-sized lender where Unipol currently holds a controlling interest. Cimbri emphasized that the deal includes no plans for outright dismissals. Instead, the firm intends to manage headcount through negotiated agreements with trade unions to streamline operations across the newly merged entities.
