STARCARES Transforms Communal Elementary Basketball Court in Davao

In the Buhangin district of Davao City, a newly renovated basketball court at Communal Elementary School now serves as a central hub for 20,000 local residents. The project, led by the STARTRADER community initiative STARCARES, replaces a deteriorated surface with a multi-purpose facility designed for both education and neighborhood gatherings.

The facility now supports 2,000 learners and 72 school staff, providing a functional venue for graduations, assemblies, and daily physical education. For the broader population of Barangay Communal, the court functions as a primary meeting point for civic activities and youth engagement. Principal Nelson Sepe Lubguban Jr. noted that the school previously relied on a cracked, uneven surface for these essential community events, highlighting the shift toward a safer environment for students and families alike.

Peter Karsten, CEO of STARTRADER, described the redevelopment as an effort to provide young people with a consistent space for development. This project follows similar infrastructure initiatives by STARCARES in Vietnam, Thailand, and Nigeria, marking a broader corporate strategy to invest in local public spaces. The organization intends to continue this work under its 'Where Tomorrow's STARS Begin' program, focusing on infrastructure that provides immediate, long-term utility to the communities where the firm operates.
