The automotive industry has spent years chasing the high-stakes dream of full autonomy, only to hit walls regarding safety, liability, and regulatory hurdles. Raghu Kulkarni, CEO of IDrive, argues that the current market is overextended on full self-driving while neglecting the practical needs of everyday drivers. By focusing on L2+—which handles tasks like lane-keeping and stop-and-go traffic while requiring a human supervisor—the company seeks to bypass the massive engineering burden of level-four or level-five systems.
Unlike fragmented driver-assistance packages, the IDrive Autonomy platform is built as a single, unified learning system. It is currently undergoing real-world testing, logging over 1,100 miles and 25 hours of operation at speeds up to 70 mph. The system is designed for a lean hardware footprint, costing roughly $1,500 per vehicle. This setup uses only two cameras and an inertial measurement unit, allowing for installation behind a rearview mirror without requiring major structural modifications to existing vehicle designs.
While the current focus remains on L2+ assistance, IDrive frames this launch as the first step in a three-stage roadmap. The company intends to evolve the technology from assisted driving toward collaborative systems and, eventually, robotaxi applications. By feeding data from these early deployments back into their underlying model, IDrive aims to build a scalable foundation that allows manufacturers to ship capable, modern driver-assist features immediately.
