Parkway Electric Shifts to Full Employee Ownership

During a September 15 meeting at the Pinnacle Center, employees of Grand Rapids-based Parkway Electric & Communications received a surprise announcement: the company has transitioned to 100% employee ownership. Through a new Employee Stock Ownership Plan, the staff now holds a direct financial stake in the firm they helped build.

The transition marks the end of nearly 24 years under the stewardship of the Huizenga Group, which acquired the electrical and communications contractor in 2002. While evaluating options for the company’s future, including a potential sale to an outside buyer, leadership concluded that an internal transfer was the most effective way to preserve the firm’s independence and corporate culture.

J.C. Huizenga, Chairman of the Huizenga Group, noted that the decision serves to honor the legacy of the people who created the company's value. For the employees, the shift offers a tangible reward for their contributions. Ryan Pate, an Electrical Site Superintendent with 28 years at the firm, described the move as a recognition of the staff’s long-term commitment.

For clients, operations will remain unchanged. Parkway President Doug Mitchell emphasized that the company’s focus on quality, service, and problem-solving remains the priority. The transition is designed to strengthen the connection between the workforce and the firm's long-term performance without altering day-to-day leadership or project delivery.
