The Penang facility will serve as the primary hub for the company's high-performance metalens technology. By housing assembly and testing operations in a single location, MetaOptics aims to streamline the transition from design to mass market. The site will feature three core proprietary platforms, including an automated system for camera module assembly and a 12-inch direct laser writer capable of producing hundreds of metalenses simultaneously for co-packaged optics.
This expansion addresses the physical limitations of conventional lenses, which the company claims are increasingly insufficient for modern, high-speed data transmission needs. Metalenses offer superior thermal stability and miniaturization, critical for next-generation data centers and consumer electronics. By leveraging Malaysia’s established semiconductor ecosystem and engineering talent, MetaOptics expects to reduce lead times and improve production yields. While the manufacturing operations move to Penang, Singapore remains the company’s global headquarters and the primary base for its research and development efforts across its four core business segments, including AI algorithms and metalens foundry services.
