XtalPi Advances AI-Driven Hair Loss Candidate to IND-Enabling Studies

At just one-hundredth the concentration of 5% topical minoxidil, a new candidate has matched existing hair-growth benchmarks in preclinical mouse models. XtalPi, the Cambridge and Shenzhen-based firm behind the discovery, is now launching formal safety and manufacturing studies to prepare for an Investigational New Drug application.

The experimental treatment targets the lactate–autophagy pathway, aiming to reactivate quiescent stem cells within hair follicles. By restoring cellular autophagy, the drug candidate promotes the recycling of damaged components, effectively waking dormant cells to stimulate growth. Early data also suggest the compound may reduce local follicular inflammation, offering a potential alternative to current standards of care like finasteride, which often carry risks of systemic side effects.

To identify this molecule, XtalPi utilized its integrated platform of AI-guided molecular design and physics-based free-energy perturbation calculations. The process was accelerated by the company's proprietary robotic synthesis and testing infrastructure. This shift into pharmaceutical development follows the successful commercialization of two AI-developed scalp-care ingredients, Remeanagen and AquaKine, which are currently marketed under the Groland brand.

As the $3.4 billion androgenetic alopecia market continues to grow, XtalPi is now evaluating dose–response relationships and long-term safety profiles. This program marks a broader expansion for the company, which recently submitted a U.S. IND for a chronic intestinal pain treatment and nominated a new HIV preclinical candidate, further demonstrating the utility of its AI-robotics pipeline across diverse therapeutic areas.
