Hurricane Isaias Idles 71% of Gulf Oil Output

Seven out of every ten barrels of U.S. Gulf oil production are currently offline as Hurricane Isaias forces a massive retreat from the region. Operators have shuttered 1.46 million barrels per day, a sharp escalation from the minor disruptions reported just three days ago as the storm intensified.

Hurricane Isaias Idles 71% of Gulf Oil Output

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement confirmed that shut-ins reached 1,458,814 barrels per day by Friday, accounting for 71.51% of the region’s total output. Natural gas infrastructure has faced similar strain, with 1.26 billion cubic feet per day—nearly 59% of Gulf production—taken off the grid. The logistics of the evacuation underscore the storm's severity: 129 production platforms have been abandoned, representing 35% of all manned facilities in the area.

While offshore operators frequently pause activity to clear personnel ahead of hurricane season, the speed of this shutdown is notable. On Tuesday, less than 10% of oil production was offline. The current figure represents an additional loss of 176,000 barrels per day since Thursday alone. The duration of this deficit remains tied to the storm’s aftermath. While undamaged platforms may resume operations following rapid safety inspections, any significant damage to subsea equipment or pipelines could trigger a longer supply squeeze in a market already grappling with thin inventories and global instability.
