The initiative, spearheaded by Salix Pharmaceuticals and Bausch Health, aimed to reduce the clinical variability often seen in cirrhosis care. By integrating population health analytics with a multidisciplinary framework, investigators tracked progress across five community gastroenterology practices. The results showed consistent growth in adherence metrics, with office visit compliance rising to 51.1% and laboratory monitoring increasing to 63.5%.
Treatment rates also saw notable improvements. Medication management for hepatic encephalopathy recurrence grew by 7.8% relative to baseline, while the use of non-selective beta-blockers for patients with varices rose to 48.8%. Additionally, enrollment in chronic care management programs saw a 9.4% relative increase. Dr. Peng-Sheng (Brian) Ting, the principal investigator, noted that these results validate the role of structured pathways in closing critical gaps in liver disease care. The study utilized the Cardinal Health PPS Analytics platform to monitor benchmarks, offering a potential scalable model for community-based practices to ensure patients receive guideline-concordant care.
