Metabolize Secures $3.2 Million to Commercialize Metabolic Research

With GLP-1 weight-loss drugs reshaping the market, San Francisco-based startup Metabolize has raised $3.2 million to translate Stanford Medicine research into consumer health products. Led by Astanor, the seed funding will support the January 2027 launch of NATLEAN, a supplement designed to assist those transitioning off pharmaceutical therapies.

Founded in 2024 by Dr. Morris Laster and Gideon Meir, the company utilizes proprietary Precision Metabolite™ Technology. This approach centers on naturally occurring compounds with specific biological roles, identified through research led by Jonathan Long, an associate professor of pathology at Stanford Medicine. By securing an exclusive license to this intellectual property, Metabolize aims to bridge the gap between academic discovery and consumer-ready health solutions.

Dr. Laster notes that while GLP-1 treatments have altered weight management, they leave a significant population seeking alternatives for long-term maintenance. NATLEAN intends to address these needs by targeting food noise and appetite regulation. Christina Ulardic, a partner at Astanor, cited the strength of the underlying research and the company's clear strategy for product translation as the primary drivers for the firm’s investment. The capital will also fund the scaling of manufacturing and further development of the company’s broader metabolic health portfolio.
