California Utilities Cut Power to Thousands as Wildfire Risk Spikes

Nearly 73,000 Pacific Gas and Electric customers are currently in the dark as the utility triggers emergency power shutoffs to mitigate wildfire risks during dangerous wind conditions. The service disruption leaves entire counties, including Alpine and Sierra, almost completely without electricity as a dry offshore wind event approaches.

California Utilities Cut Power to Thousands as Wildfire Risk Spikes

Southern California Edison is preparing for a significantly larger operational impact, with potential safety shutoffs looming for roughly 254,000 customers. This figure represents 5% of the utility's total base, with the heaviest concentrations of risk located in Ventura County, where 126,000 residents face disconnection, and Los Angeles County, accounting for another 90,000 potential outages. The company warns that service interruptions could occur within a one-to-four-hour window for many of these households.

PG&E remains on high alert, tracking a forecasted dry offshore wind event set to sweep through the region from Wednesday evening through Saturday evening. These preventative measures prioritize grid safety over consistent delivery, as the state braces for conditions that historically fuel rapid wildfire spread.
