The scale of the energy challenge is stark. According to Anand Rathi Research, the renewable capacity dedicated to data centers must climb from 16.1 gigawatts today to 32.4 gigawatts by 2030. Kuldeep Jain, founder of CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions, notes that the race for power is creating a market where demand consistently exceeds available supply. To mitigate grid reliance, major technology firms are moving toward 15-20-year contracts, exemplified by Meta’s recent partnership with CleanMax to develop 837 megawatts of wind and solar capacity in Rajasthan and Karnataka.
Public pushback is adding further pressure on developers. Following protests in Mumbai over massive infrastructure projects proposed by Amazon and Google, the Indian government is drafting new regulations to protect household consumers from rising energy costs. While BloombergNEF projects that data center power demand could reach 636 terawatt-hours by 2050—roughly 11% of the country’s total electricity consumption—the immediate hurdle remains balancing rapid digital growth with a transition away from the current coal-heavy grid.
