Volkswagen Faces Deepening Losses Amid Massive Restructuring Push

A projected operating loss of 5.79 billion euros looms over Volkswagen’s upcoming third-quarter report, a sharp deterioration from the 1.3 billion euro loss recorded during the same period last year. Investors are bracing for impact as restructuring charges and a cooling Chinese market continue to weigh heavily on the automaker’s bottom line.

Volkswagen Faces Deepening Losses Amid Massive Restructuring Push

Revenue is expected to slide to 78 billion euros, down from 80.31 billion euros a year ago, according to FactSet analyst estimates. The company’s financial health remains clouded by the timing of exceptional costs, with Citi analysts warning that volatility will likely persist. Significant burdens include an 8 billion euro charge in the third quarter, followed by additional costs totaling 8 billion euros through 2027.

RBC Capital Markets points to a 6 billion euro noncash Porsche goodwill impairment alongside 2 billion euros in incremental restructuring costs as primary drivers of the quarterly decline. These expenses cover expanded early retirement programs, the planned divestment of the Osnabrueck plant, and asset impairments tied to joint ventures in China. To combat these pressures, the supervisory board has moved to double planned job cuts to 100,000 and halve the current model portfolio. These measures follow a recent downward revision to full-year guidance, reflecting a challenging environment for the company as it employs roughly 652,000 people.
