Bank of Canada Raises Key Rate to 2.50% Amid Inflation Concerns

The Bank of Canada hiked its key overnight rate to 2.50% on Wednesday, opting for a 25-basis-point increase. While global economic resilience persists, the central bank signaled a cautious approach as it balances stronger-than-expected domestic growth against the persistent inflationary pressure of high energy costs.

Bank of Canada Raises Key Rate to 2.50% Amid Inflation Concerns

The bank rate now stands at 2.75%, with the deposit rate moving to 2.45%. Despite this tightening, the governing council remains wary of the risks posed by energy prices spreading to broader consumer goods. Officials noted that Canadian GDP growth hit 3.3% in the second quarter, significantly outperforming previous projections, though they expect a slowdown in the fourth quarter of 2026 due to impending U.S. tariffs.

Inflation remains a primary concern, with CPI currently hovering near 3%. The Bank of Canada projects this figure could climb to 3.5% by year-end, with a return to the 2% target not expected until mid-2028. Following the announcement, the Canadian dollar experienced volatility, trading near 1.4040 against the U.S. dollar, while gold in Canadian dollar terms dipped 0.36% to $5,684.40 per ounce. Policymakers emphasized that while further rate hikes remain a possibility, the ongoing uncertainty regarding international trade relations and geopolitical developments in the Middle East requires a measured, data-dependent strategy.
