Equinor Doubles Estimates for North Sea Afrodite Field

A fresh appraisal well in the Norwegian North Sea has revealed that the Afrodite gas discovery holds double the reserves previously anticipated. By drilling into the reservoir this past autumn, operator Equinor confirmed that the site, first identified in 2008, now holds between 77 and 180 million barrels of oil equivalent.

Equinor Doubles Estimates for North Sea Afrodite Field

The discovery sits strategically near the existing Kvitebjørn and Gullfaks fields. While total reservoir volumes are triple the current recovery estimate, geological constraints dictate a more conservative extraction path. Kjetil Hove, Equinor’s executive vice president for Exploration & Production Norway, described the find as a significant success for a mature continental shelf area, noting that the appraisal results far exceeded internal projections.

Equinor is currently evaluating a plan to tie the Afrodite field back to the Kvitebjørn platform. Success here would allow the company to route gas through established infrastructure toward the Kollsnes processing plant, ultimately supplying the European market. This development aligns with the company’s broader strategy to drill up to 30 exploration wells annually, securing production levels through 2035 as Norway pushes to maintain its status as a primary energy exporter for Europe.
