Euro Hits 17-Month Low as ECB Holds Rates Amid French Debt Volatility

The euro slid to $1.1103 on Thursday, marking its lowest point since May 2025, after the European Central Bank held interest rates steady. The decision, coupled with Christine Lagarde’s surprise announcement that she will step down early in 2027, left markets grappling with political uncertainty and cooling sovereign bond yields.

Euro Hits 17-Month Low as ECB Holds Rates Amid French Debt Volatility

The ECB’s choice to maintain current rates reflects a precarious balancing act between curbing stubborn inflation and stabilizing a bond market rattled by recent French budget concerns. While the central bank acknowledged that tightening financing conditions are beginning to dampen economic growth, it stopped short of signaling aggressive future hikes. The 10-year German Bund yield fell 4.8 basis points to 3.336%, while French OAT yields dropped 10 basis points to 4.833% as investors sought refuge in fixed-income assets.

Market participants suggest that the ECB remains wary of exacerbating volatility in sovereign borrowing costs. Robeco strategist Rikkert Scholten noted that the bank is effectively avoiding further upheaval in the French debt market, where yield spreads recently hit levels not seen since 2011. Despite the pause, money markets are still pricing in nearly three quarter-point rate increases over the next twelve months. Meanwhile, analysts are shifting their focus to the leadership transition, noting that Lagarde’s early departure creates a new layer of uncertainty regarding the future use of non-standard policy tools like the Transmission Protection Instrument.
