The Bloomberg Commodity Total Return Index remains largely flat for October, masking intense volatility beneath the surface. While energy markets have climbed on the back of Middle East tensions and supply constraints, precious metals have struggled under the weight of rising bond yields and shifting interest-rate expectations. Silver and platinum have been hit particularly hard, as industrial demand concerns and long liquidation by speculative traders amplified the downward pressure.
Industrial metals have shown surprising resilience despite broader economic anxieties. Copper, though pressured by inventory growth and uncertainty regarding potential U.S. tariffs, continues to find support from long-term infrastructure and electrification trends. This divergence highlights the erratic nature of the current market cycle, where geopolitical events, weather patterns, and macroeconomic policy pull different sectors in opposite directions.
The contrast to 2025 performance is stark. Precious metals, which led the market with 80% gains last year, have retreated 11% year-to-date, while energy has surged nearly 100% following last year’s 10% decline. For investors, this volatility serves as a reminder that commodity performance is rarely uniform, making sector rotation a critical component of risk management in an unpredictable global landscape.
