Cogent Communications Shares Sink on Fourth-Quarter Revenue Miss

Cogent Communications Holdings shares plummeted Friday morning after the internet service provider reported fourth-quarter revenue that trailed analyst expectations, overshadowing a narrower-than-expected quarterly loss.

Cogent Communications Shares Sink on Fourth-Quarter Revenue Miss

The stock dropped 31% to $18.10 in early trading, intensifying a year-long decline that has erased 78% of its value. The sharp sell-off reflects investor concern over the company's top-line performance despite broader efforts to manage its operational deficit.

Revenue Miss and Narrowing Losses

According to the company's financial report, quarterly revenue fell to $240.5 million, down from $252.3 million in the prior-year period. This performance lagged behind the $243.5 million consensus estimate targeted by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Despite the revenue decline, Cogent managed to reduce its quarterly deficit. The company reported a net loss of $30.8 million, or 64 cents per share, compared with a loss of $43.3 million a year earlier. While this result outperformed the $1.03 per share loss anticipated by Wall Street, the improvement was insufficient to offset the negative sentiment surrounding the revenue contraction.
