Founded in 1997 by author and speaker Serita A. Jakes, the program has guided nearly 1,500 participants through a rigorous curriculum covering financial literacy, public speaking, and life skills. The event serves as more than a formal recognition; it acts as a gateway for educational advancement, with the T.D. Jakes Foundation having distributed over $1 million in scholarships during the last four years alone.

"The Grand Cotillion is a celebration of the remarkable growth, leadership, and potential of these young ladies," Jakes stated, noting the program's emphasis on personal development for participants aged 10 to 17. By fostering mentorship networks, the initiative aims to instill a sense of purpose that persists long after the ceremony ends. Former debutante Teriesa Tucker described the experience as a transformative lifestyle rather than a temporary title, highlighting the lasting bonds formed between participants and mentors. The upcoming gala, running from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., will continue this tradition by honoring the dedication of this year's 47 debutantes before their families and community supporters.
