Daicel Polymer Powder Powers New Stick-Form Lubricant

Maintenance crews at office and industrial sites may soon abandon messy oil bottles for a solid stick-form lubricant. Developed by Maia Co. Ltd., the product utilizes Daicel Corporation’s DURAST POM fine powder to stabilize grease, effectively eliminating the dripping and waste common in conventional lubrication methods.

The innovation hinges on Maia’s proprietary Sol-Mid manufacturing technology, which blends grease with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. Daicel’s DURAST POM acts as a critical interlayer, ensuring compatibility between these materials. This chemical bridge allows the lubricant to maintain its shape while remaining effective under mechanical stress. By shifting to a solid format, the product reduces the reliance on traditional maintenance oils for office equipment by roughly 80 percent.

Creating the powder itself required a technical shift from standard grinding methods. Daicel engineered a proprietary process to produce DURAST POM with a controlled, sharp particle size distribution, overcoming the historical difficulty of processing general-purpose resins into uniform powders. The resulting material is now slated for widespread commercial use, targeting sectors ranging from precision office equipment repair to industrial conveyor system maintenance and bicycle care.
