Acurion Scales Leadership Team to Drive OncoGaze Platform Deployment

Following a $4.3 million seed funding round, San Diego-based precision oncology firm Acurion has significantly expanded its leadership, board, and advisory roster. The additions aim to bolster the company’s regulatory, clinical, and commercial capabilities as it prepares its AI-driven OncoGaze™ platform for clinical integration.

The new appointments bring extensive experience from companies including Natera, Illumina, and Leica Biosystems. Mike Hoerres, formerly CEO of Cernostics, joins as Advising Chief Commercial Officer, while David Schlessinger takes on the role of VP of Product Development. Regulatory strategy will be led by Heather Jalisi, who brings two decades of experience in the diagnostics sector. Operational and strategic partnership efforts are now supported by Rick Schmitt as VP of Technology Operations and Leandra Boysen as Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships. Additionally, Mariya Kazachkova joins as Senior Machine Learning Scientist, transitioning from a research role at the University of California, San Diego.

The company’s board and advisory ranks have also seen high-profile additions. Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs and Yale Cancer Center Director Eric Winer have joined as strategic advisors. Tomas Koch, a former senior partner at McKinsey & Company, has been appointed to the Board of Directors, while former Bristol Myers Squibb executive Ho Sung Cho joins the scientific advisory team. These hires are designed to support the commercialization of OncoGaze™, which uses AI to extract biomarker insights from routine pathology images, bypassing the need for additional tissue samples or specialized molecular testing.
