The Air Force is prioritizing a software-first strategy, utilizing the Autonomy Government Reference Architecture to decouple flight systems from mission logic. This framework allows for rapid updates across a diverse fleet, preventing the service from being locked into a single contractor or airframe design. By separating these layers, the military can integrate Hivemind across various platforms, reducing the costs and technical risks typically associated with large-scale aircraft development.
Christian Gutierrez, senior vice president of Hivemind at Shield AI, noted that this modular approach is essential for scaling future airpower. Under the new award, the company will focus on collaborative combat behaviors, where autonomous aircraft operate in coordinated swarms under human supervision. Hivemind, which is already undergoing flight testing on Anduril’s YFQ-44A, is designed to act as a pilot surrogate capable of executing complex tactics and reacting to dynamic battlefield conditions in real time.
