Dr. Philip McDonald Launches Gotham City Bockers for TBT 2026

As New York celebrates a recent NBA championship, a new organization is staking its claim on the summer circuit. Founded by sports medicine physician Dr. Philip B. McDonald, the Gotham City Bockers will debut at The Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas this July, competing for a $2 million winner-take-all prize.

The organization aims to blend high-stakes competitive basketball with a broader mission of community impact and youth philanthropy. To anchor the team’s debut, McDonald has tapped former Orlando Magic standout Dennis Scott to serve as head coach. Scott, an NBA veteran turned broadcaster, brings extensive professional experience to a roster currently being assembled for the tournament's new Mercenary Bracket. The team will be supported by a deep bench of basketball veterans, including lead assistant coach Derrick Alston and general manager Dwight Walton, both of whom carry lengthy résumés from collegiate and international professional play.

Beyond the court, the Bockers are forging local ties by partnering with Knicks Fan TV to engage the city’s dedicated basketball culture. This initiative aligns with the goals of the Ignite World Foundation, McDonald’s charitable organization, which seeks to use athletic success to fund future STEM and sports science academies. The team is scheduled to compete at the M Resort Spa Casino in Las Vegas from July 22 through August 2, marking a significant expansion of McDonald’s multi-year involvement in the tournament. As the event transitions to a new media partnership with FOX Sports, the Bockers hope to turn their debut into a platform for both athletic excellence and long-term community development.
