The sale involves five regional FCC licenses covering a segment of narrowband PCS spectrum currently utilized by Spok’s two-way transmitter network. To maintain service continuity, the company plans to migrate existing users to alternative frequencies already held within its inventory. According to Spok, this transition will be managed via over-the-air device reprogramming, ensuring the shift remains invisible to end users.
Chief Executive Vincent D. Kelly noted that the divestiture will not disrupt operations for current subscribers. As wireless user attrition persists across the industry, Spok no longer requires the same volume of paging frequencies to support its healthcare communications platform, Spok Care Connect. A portion of the $8 million purchase price remains deferred until the full migration of users to the new frequencies is complete.
