Envision Energy Secures 660MWh Storage Deal for South Africa’s Naos-1

A 660MWh battery energy storage system will anchor the Naos-1 project near Viljoenskroon, marking a significant shift in South Africa’s private energy landscape. The initiative, led by the SOLA Group and WBHO, represents the largest privately contracted hybrid renewable energy project to reach financial close in the nation to date.

The Naos-1 site integrates 300MW of solar PV generation with massive battery capacity to address the intermittency issues common in renewable energy. By utilizing the national grid for power wheeling, the facility provides dispatchable clean electricity to private corporate offtakers across the country. Envision Energy will oversee the entire value chain for the storage component, providing technical support from manufacturing to long-term maintenance.

To ensure operational longevity, Envision and the SOLA Group signed a 25-year Long-Term Service Agreement. The system relies on AI-driven energy management to optimize performance and grid stability. John Lee, Envision’s General Manager for Asia and Africa, noted that the project proves integrated storage can deliver both reliability and economic value at scale. Ian Burger, Managing Director of SOLA Build, added that the infrastructure is designed specifically to meet the sustainability and cost-efficiency demands of modern private-sector power markets.
