SKF Backs Recycling Startup to Turn Steel Waste Into Chemicals

Swedish industrial giant SKF has taken a strategic stake in Anferra, a startup specializing in the conversion of hazardous steel grinding sludge. The partnership, joined by Stephen Industries and Chalmers Ventures, aims to transform manufacturing waste into viable chemical products rather than leaving it to sit in landfills.

SKF Backs Recycling Startup to Turn Steel Waste Into Chemicals

The recycling process developed by Anferra targets the steel and bearing industry's most stubborn waste stream. By chemically treating grinding sludge, the startup extracts ferric chloride, a substance widely utilized in water purification and treatment facilities. Beyond this chemical output, the method generates hydrogen gas, offering a secondary path for energy storage.

Mikael Krook, director of SKF Ventures, identified the sludge as a significant hurdle for circular manufacturing. By integrating this technology, SKF intends to accelerate its decarbonization efforts. Financial terms of the investment remain undisclosed, but the collaboration signals a shift toward capturing value from industrial byproducts previously considered difficult to manage.
