Zscaler Boosts Browser Security With SquareX Acquisition

San Jose-based cloud security firm Zscaler has acquired SquareX to integrate advanced browser protection into its Zero Trust platform. The deal, announced for an undisclosed sum, aims to secure users on unmanaged devices by embedding lightweight extensions directly into popular browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Zscaler Boosts Browser Security With SquareX Acquisition

The acquisition marks a strategic push for Zscaler to move beyond traditional virtual private networks (VPNs) and specialized secure browsers. By integrating SquareX’s technology, Zscaler allows enterprises to enforce security policies across various web environments without requiring a full software agent. This approach targets the growing trend of hybrid work, where employees often access corporate data from personal or unmanaged hardware.

Eliminating Legacy Security Friction

According to the company, the integration will provide a seamless security layer that does not sacrifice performance. SquareX founder Vivek Ramachandran noted that the partnership allows IT departments to phase out expensive and often insecure legacy access tools. By utilizing artificial intelligence to monitor and protect data, the platform seeks to mitigate risks associated with web-based threats while maintaining a native user experience.

The transition focuses on three core operational improvements for Zscaler’s global client base:

    • Deployment of security protocols without the need for standalone third-party browsers.
  • Enhanced visibility into user activities on unmanaged devices and remote endpoints.
    • Reduced overhead by replacing fragmented legacy infrastructure with a unified Zero Trust architecture.
