Hormuz Tanker Traffic Wanes Amid Escalating U.S.-Iran Standoff

Tanker activity through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed to a crawl, hitting single digits this week as geopolitical friction intensifies. With only five crossings recorded Wednesday and nine on Thursday, traffic has dipped significantly below the typical monthly average of 12, according to vessel-tracking data provided by Kpler.

While traffic through the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb remains robust at 19 commodity carriers, the Hormuz slump underscores the mounting pressure on the region's shipping lanes. These figures represent only vessels with active transponders, leaving the full extent of the maritime lull partially obscured.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signaled that the U.S. Navy intends to maintain its blockade indefinitely by rotating naval assets, promising upcoming measures of economic isolation unprecedented in scope. Despite these threats and the persistent stalemate, oil markets have remained restrained, largely swayed by an unexpected 17.4 million barrel surge in U.S. commercial inventories. Analysts warn that this detachment from geopolitical reality may be temporary; should the standoff endure, global supply depletion—compounded by China’s return to active crude purchasing—could trigger a sharp price correction.
