Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt announced plans to launch a dedicated coal trade exchange to modernize market transparency. Speaking at a commodity event in Mumbai, Dutt emphasized that current production gains and sector reforms—which now allow private firms to operate mines—have created a shift toward market-driven trade. This infrastructure could eventually pave the way for a coal derivatives market.
Despite a significant push toward renewable energy, coal continues to anchor India’s power grid, accounting for roughly 60% of total electricity generation. Authorities remain focused on preventing blackouts during extreme weather events, ensuring that fossil fuel reliance persists to meet industrial and residential baseload requirements. Government advisers have suggested that coal will remain a cornerstone of the national energy mix for at least the next two decades, with the primary policy challenge now shifting toward balancing this consumption with long-term sustainability goals.
