Allegheny General Hospital Joins Clinical Trial for Pulmonary Hypertension

Cardiologists at Allegheny General Hospital have launched a clinical trial for a new therapy targeting pulmonary arterial hypertension, marking the first time this treatment is available in the region. The hospital remains the only site in the tri-state area currently enrolling patients for the Novartis-sponsored study.

The trial evaluates an investigational drug, LTP001, designed to block a specific protein linked to the abnormal thickening of pulmonary arteries. Unlike existing medications that primarily focus on relaxing blood vessels, this therapy aims to address the root cause of the condition. Hayah Kassis-George, a board-certified cardiologist leading the study at AHN, noted that current options often leave patients with little beyond symptom management. By targeting the underlying protein, researchers hope to slow or potentially halt the progression of the disease.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension remains a serious condition, with between 500 and 1,000 new cases diagnosed annually, predominantly affecting women aged 30 to 60. The condition forces the heart to work under extreme strain, frequently leading to right-side heart failure. Amresh Raina, medical director of AHN’s Pulmonary Hypertension division, emphasized that the disease is difficult to detect because many patients appear healthy in early stages. AHN’s involvement in this trial reinforces its status as one of four designated Pulmonary Hypertension Care Centers in Pennsylvania, providing patients access to advanced surgical interventions, including pulmonary thrombectomy, alongside specialized medical research.
