Student Leaders Convene in D.C. to Address Teacher Shortages

On October 8, student representatives from four national career organizations will descend on the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. They arrive with a singular, pressing agenda: identifying the specific barriers and incentives that will determine whether the next generation chooses a career in the American classroom.

The gathering, held in conjunction with National Be A Teacher Day™, brings together leaders from FCCLA, FBLA, the National FFA Organization, and SkillsUSA. While policymakers often debate the educator pipeline through the lens of statistics and fiscal policy, these students intend to shift the focus toward the lived experiences that shape their professional aspirations. They will dissect how current educators influence their career paths and what systemic changes are required to render teaching a more attractive prospect for high-achieving youth.

Organized by the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), the event serves as a platform to elevate the teaching profession and bridge the gap between student perception and workforce reality. Participants will offer firsthand testimony on the factors that discourage them from entering education and the conditions necessary to foster a sustainable, motivated workforce. By providing direct access to these voices, the event aims to provide educators and lawmakers with the insights needed to stabilize the future of the nation’s schools.
