Brian Cox Awarded 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication

Physicist and broadcaster Brian Cox has received the 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal, an honor recognizing his global impact on public scientific literacy. Starmus Festival founders Sir Brian May and Garik Israelian presented the award at London’s Royal Astronomical Society, marking a decade of the prize's mission to bridge science and the arts.

Established ten years ago by the late Stephen Hawking, the medal serves to highlight individuals who translate complex scientific discovery into accessible narratives through music, film, and public discourse. For Cox, the recognition carries personal weight; he stood alongside Hawking during the prize's inaugural announcement a decade ago. Reflecting on the current global climate, Cox noted that the pursuit of understanding the universe remains a vital endeavor, echoing Hawking’s enduring advice to keep looking toward the stars.

While the official festival ceremony is scheduled for October 17 in Tenerife, scheduling conflicts necessitated this private presentation in London. The upcoming Starmus VIII festival, titled The Search for Truth, will feature an opening celebration blending classical performance and scientific advocacy, with appearances by Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, and the STARMUS All Stars Band. Beyond the medal itself, Cox received an 18K Moonshine Gold OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch, a traditional gift for recipients of the honor. Previous winners of the accolade include Sir David Attenborough and filmmaker Christopher Nolan, cementing the medal's role in celebrating those who make the wonders of science a universal language.
