Fit Energy to Transform Former Luzerne County Mine into Data Hub

A former mining and aggregate site in Newport Township is slated for a major industrial overhaul, as Fit Energy prepares to break ground on a non-combustion fuel cell power generation and data center complex following municipal zoning approval secured in August 2026.

The project repurposes land previously scarred by extraction rather than encroaching on undeveloped forests or farmland. By utilizing natural gas fuel cells manufactured by FuelCell Energy, the facility will generate power through an electrochemical process. This method avoids traditional combustion, significantly reducing noise and environmental impact on the surrounding Luzerne County community. The onsite generation capability also alleviates pressure on the regional power grid.

Beyond energy production, the development includes comprehensive upgrades to local water, sewer, and gas infrastructure, boosting overall utility capacity. Construction activities are expected to provide a multi-year stimulus for regional contractors and skilled trades, eventually transitioning into permanent operational and maintenance roles. To mitigate visual impact, the site plan incorporates specific setbacks, landscaping, and screening to shield the facility from nearby residential views.

Fit Energy is currently negotiating a Community Benefits Agreement to formalize local investment priorities. Township Manager Joe Hillan noted that the company has engaged proactively with local commissioners to address resident concerns, with further public information sessions scheduled to maintain transparency throughout the permitting and buildout phases.
