BAM Mutual Targets Next Generation of Municipal Bond Investors

With the average municipal bond investor reaching age 61, the industry faces a demographic gap that threatens to stall vital infrastructure funding. BAM Mutual is launching a strategic outreach campaign to attract younger financial advisors and retail buyers, aiming to demystify a market characterized by 50,000 unique borrowers.

The initiative arrives as the municipal bond sector approaches a historic milestone, with 2026 new-issue sales projected to exceed $600 billion. Retail investors currently hold over 40% of outstanding municipal debt, according to Federal Reserve data, making their continued participation essential for funding schools, water systems, and transportation networks. BAM, which has supported over $190 billion in community investments across 50 states, intends to leverage its AA/Stable rating to provide the credit security necessary to draw new participants into the fold.

CEO Sean W. McCarthy noted that the company’s guaranty serves to lower borrowing costs for municipalities while enhancing market access. By providing advanced data analysis and underwriting tools, the firm hopes to simplify the complexities of the municipal landscape for a younger demographic. Head of Investor Relations Don Farrell emphasized that the market's sheer size—comprising hundreds of distinct revenue streams—can be daunting for newcomers. Through this digital-focused engagement strategy, the insurer aims to ensure that the infrastructure projects of tomorrow remain backed by a stable and informed base of individual investors.
