Geotab automates California heavy-duty emissions compliance

California’s rigorous Clean Truck Check program just gained a digital edge as Geotab becomes one of the first telematics providers to integrate the J1979-2 protocol. By embedding this standard directly into its hardware, the company aims to eliminate manual data reporting and reduce vehicle downtime for fleets operating within the state.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandates that heavy-duty vehicles, including those registered outside California, adhere to strict Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance standards. Geotab’s latest update allows its GO9 device family to automatically detect and utilize J1979-2, J1979, or J1939 protocols without requiring manual setting changes or additional hardware. This streamlined approach allows fleet managers to transmit emissions data through a single, unified platform.

Sabina Martin, VP of Product at Geotab, noted that this integration serves as a future-ready pathway for operators navigating shifting mandates. By automating the data collection workflow, companies can shift away from administrative-heavy reporting processes. As regulatory bodies increasingly move toward standardized digital frameworks, this early adoption of J1979-2 provides a technical buffer for fleets facing evolving environmental policies.
