The order consists of 24 FCrail 200 kW fuel cell modules, which will serve as the primary power source for the trains. This agreement expands a multi-year partnership between the two companies that began in 2022, following successful deployments of the same technology in Germany. Deliveries of the engine components are scheduled for 2027 and 2028, with the full fleet expected to begin passenger service by 2029.
These trains are designed to replace diesel locomotives on non-electrified rail lines, offering a zero-emission alternative that maintains the range and refueling capabilities required for demanding regional transit. Thomas Graetz, Head of Regional and Commuter Rail at Siemens Mobility, emphasized that the project brings proven German rail technology to the Romanian market, while Ballard CEO Marty Neese noted that the scale of this deployment represents a significant step in the broader transition to clean European transport.
