PepsiCo faces investor pressure as growth targets slip

A year after Elliott Investment Management secured a $4 billion stake in PepsiCo, the snack and beverage giant is struggling to reconcile its growth promises with a shrinking North American market. Investors are now questioning whether the company’s current strategy can withstand both persistent inflation and the rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs.

PepsiCo enters Thursday's third-quarter earnings report under intense scrutiny, with shares down roughly 16% since Elliott’s intervention. Despite aggressive productivity savings and localized price cuts for brands like Lay’s and Doritos, the company’s core operating margin sat at 16.3% during the first half of the year—a 15-basis-point decline from the previous year. This trajectory conflicts with the 100-basis-point expansion target established following discussions with Elliott.

Analysts point to a fundamental disconnect between PepsiCo’s operational efforts and market reality. While the company has rolled out healthier alternatives like Doritos Protein and SunChips Fiber to counter the popularity of GLP-1 drugs, its core business remains under pressure. Robert Moskow of TD Cowen noted that massive investments in the US Frito-Lay segment—spanning new product launches and expanded distribution—have failed to prevent stagnant sales and market share losses. With enterprise value slipping to 10 times EBITDA, investors are demanding clear evidence that volume declines in North American snacks have finally hit a floor.
