Natural Gas Storage Surplus Narrows as Weekly Injections Slow

U.S. natural gas inventories likely grew by a modest 79 billion cubic feet last week, a development that continues to shrink the storage surplus relative to the five-year average. Market participants anticipate this tightening trend will leave total stocks 136 billion cubic feet below where they stood this time last year.

Natural Gas Storage Surplus Narrows as Weekly Injections Slow

A survey of 12 analysts, brokers, and traders places net injections for the week ending October 2 at 79 Bcf, though individual estimates vary significantly from 48 Bcf to 91 Bcf. This projected growth sits well below the 96 Bcf average typically recorded during this time of year between 2021 and 2025. If these figures hold, the surplus over the five-year average will drop to 62 Bcf, down from the 79 Bcf reported the previous week.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration plans to release the official inventory data on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. EDT. The final tally will confirm whether the storage gap continues its steady decline as the market moves deeper into the autumn season.
