Winterizing Your Vehicle: ASE Advice for October Maintenance

ASE president and CEO Dave Johnson emphasizes that preventative maintenance serves as an investment in safety. The organization recommends a comprehensive check of the battery and charging system, as cold weather frequently compromises performance. Furthermore, drivers should ensure their cooling systems are flushed and refilled, as antifreeze generally requires replacement every two years.

Safety on slick roads depends heavily on proper braking and tire integrity. Technicians should verify brake system components and inspect tire tread depth and pressure, including the spare. In regions prone to heavy snow or ice, specialized tires may be necessary for adequate traction. Additionally, routine maintenance should include oil changes and the inspection of fuel, air, and transmission filters. Visibility is equally critical; motorists are advised to confirm that all lights are functioning and to replace worn or cracked wiper blades before the first storm.
