84 Lumber Builds Leadership Pathways Through Truss Manufacturing

Before roof and floor trusses reach a job site, they require a complex web of design, logistics, and skilled production. During Careers in Construction Month, 84 Lumber is highlighting how its manufacturing plants serve as internal training grounds, transforming entry-level hires into plant managers across 22 states.

At the company’s Winchester, Virginia, facility, associates rotate through production, design, and dispatch to understand the full life cycle of building components. The core of this initiative is a Production Manager in Training program, which spans nine to 12 months. Participants master technical skills like operating saws and forklifts while gaining exposure to the customer service and leadership responsibilities that keep the supply chain moving.

Since the program’s relaunch two years ago, more than 30 associates have graduated, with six advancing directly into plant manager roles. Ken Kucera, Vice President of Installed Sales and Manufacturing, emphasizes that the company prioritizes internal promotion over external hiring. For employees like Cade Templeton, a former collegiate athlete who rose to manage the Powhatan, Virginia, location, the path offers a clear trajectory from the production floor to executive oversight. National Production Manager Scott Compton, who began his own career as an entry-level builder 29 years ago, now mentors the next generation, reinforcing a culture that views construction manufacturing not merely as a job, but as a long-term professional development track.
