This deal marks a significant shift in how low-band spectrum is utilized, effectively integrating satellite infrastructure with mobile services. Grain Management, which only recently acquired this specific portfolio from T-Mobile in August 2026, views the move as a validation of its strategy to identify and develop underutilized digital assets. By offloading these holdings to SpaceX, the firm is positioning the spectrum to support the Federal Communications Commission’s push for expanded national coverage and improved satellite-terrestrial network integration.
David Grain, founder and CEO of the investment firm, noted that the transaction highlights the increasing convergence of ground and space-based networks. The sale aligns with the conditions set by the FCC in July 2026, which outlined a pathway for competitive D2D deployment. BDT & MSD Partners advised Grain on the transaction, while Milbank and Latham & Watkins provided legal and regulatory counsel respectively.
