The Dow finished at 51,654.95, a 0.83% increase, while the S&P 500 rose 0.59% to 7,811.54. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.64% to 27,366.17. Despite the optimism in equities, energy markets remained turbulent; oil futures rose 0.4% to $91.85 a barrel as traders braced for Hurricane Isaias. BP responded by evacuating its Na Kika and Thunder Horse platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, diesel futures softened following news that Russia would supply fuel to address domestic shortages for farmers and truckers.
Treasury markets showed mixed results, with the 10-year note yield nudging to 5.243%, hovering near multi-decade highs. Corporate shifts also drove volatility: T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon shares slumped between 8.7% and 13% after SpaceX announced an $8 billion purchase of wireless spectrum. Conversely, Humana surged 12% to $431.87 following positive updates on its Medicare Advantage plan ratings. These developments arrive against a backdrop of cooling consumer sentiment, with the University of Michigan’s index slipping to 46.3 in October.
