San Bernardino Water District Launches Field Notes Newsletter

The San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District has debuted Field Notes, a monthly publication documenting groundwater management in the Santa Ana River Wash. By detailing daily observations from the field, the district aims to bridge the gap between technical water stewardship and the public interest in regional resource security.

The newsletter takes its name from the logs kept by scientists and land managers working along the Santa Ana River and Mill Creek. General Manager Betsy Miller Vixie noted that these records provide a direct line of communication to taxpayers and stakeholders, explaining the mechanics of recharge projects that underpin the valley’s water supply.

The inaugural October edition showcases the scope of current operations, including a $5.403 million U.S. Bureau of Reclamation grant designated for Oak Creek recharge basins. The report also highlights the district’s performance during the 2025–26 water year, which saw 40,291 acre-feet of groundwater recharge. Beyond infrastructure, the publication tracks human capital, such as the GrizzlyCorps fellowship awarded to intern Maya Stokes. Readers can access these updates via the district's website or through direct email subscriptions.
